The banana industry moves fast and travels far. From farms to freight to foreign shelves. Nobody reads the fine print. Nobody remembers the company name. What they remember is the colour of the box.
Chiquita understood this decades ago. Their blue sticker became shorthand for quality across continents, not because of advertising, but because of consistency. In a commodity market, recognition is the only differentiation that survives the supply chain.
And one of our clients wanted the same effect.
They wanted a box that would become their identity, in a colour that each distributor would recognise.

The brief wasn’t “design a box.” It was “build a memory.”
Technology Limitations
Banana export packaging runs on flexo printing. Flat colours only, two, three, four at most. No photographic printing. The entire creative canvas is, by design, constrained. Each shape, each colour, each gradient has to be designed with utmost care. One wrong call and you're invisible on the shelf
Competitors
Every competitor works within the same rules. Which means the market is full of boxes that look just similar enough to confuse a buyer.

Buyers navigated this by colour. They didn’t ask for brands. They used to say, "Laal box waala do." "Green box waala

Why Us
Our Approach
We studied the market before we opened a design file.
The work started with research. We studied colour psychology and cultural associations specific to their export regions to understand how colour signals quality, freshness, and trust in the markets these boxes were built for.
Red stood out
Warm, high-visibility, and culturally resonant across African retail and wholesale environments. The kind of colour that registers before you're close enough to read the label.
Color Theory
With the colour validated, we built the identity from scratch. Mascots and visual elements were designed specifically for them. Every element was stress-tested against the constraints of flexo printing: flat colour, large format, multiple surfaces.
Final Design
We built photo mockups of real retail environments, placing each mock-up of our boxes alongside competitors in several settings, stores, shelves, supermarts, and wholesale markets. And compared which boxes held up. Which grabbed your attention, and which a consumer would choose. The answer shaped the final design.
